NORTH SYRACUSE -- It seems to be what everyone is talking about these days...swine flu. Across Central New York, schools are trying to prevent it from spreading, but local businesses are taking notice too.

Staying healthy and germ-free is key to staying productive. They know that all too well at SRC. And with the swine flu pandemic sweeping across the country, they aren't taking any chances. "It comes up everyday. I think everyone's concerned," said Lisa Mondello, company spokesperson for SRC. "A lot of us have children. You hear about it on the news constantly, so yes we're very concerned."

With the H1N1 flu so rampant right now, SRC is trying to be proactive. They're stocking conference rooms with extra Kleenex, putting hand sanitizers on the walls and bathrooms as well as in the copy room and gym. They also have a plan in place if someone calls in sick and they've put up poster and update an inter-office website with information about swine flu. "With something like this, we're going above and beyond. We're adding hand sanitizers and Clorox wipes, tissues to common areas like conference rooms," Mondello said.

And they aren't alone. At Action News, management sent out a letter to employees, urging them to take extra precautions to stay healthy. At businesses across Central New York, employers are doing what they can to prevent the spread of swine flu. At Action News, they've stocked the restrooms with big bottles of hand sanitizer. Cleaning crew are staying busy, scrubbing down surfaces top to bottom and vacuuming floors. "Most of the clients have been asking for railings to be wiped down with a germicidal cleaner or a disinfectant cleaner; elevators where people touch, vending machines," said Tony Desalvo, President of Corporate Maintenance Systems. Desalvo says he's seen new requests from clients in light of the swine flu. They want telephones wiped down along with door knobs and keyboards, all preventative measures to keep employees from getting sick. "We're doing anything and everything to keep it away and hopefully it will work," Mondello said.

But businesses and cleaning crews can only do so much. Employees must also take an active role in stopping the spread of swine flu by washing their hands, covering their mouth when they cough and staying home if they feel sick.
