SYRACUSE -- The Onondaga County Health Department announced Thursday afternoon that another Onondaga County resident infected with the H1N1 "swine" flu has died. This comes as Governor David Paterson has declared a "state of emergency" for New York State due to the swine flu.
Health Commissioner Dr. Cynthia Morrow made the announcement at the department's weekly news conference, but would only say that the deceased person is an adult with an underlying medical condition. No other information about the person was released.
Morrow said that the department has seen reports of increasing hospitalizations in the county due to flu, and health officials are urging people who are sick to stay home so they can get rest and keep others from becoming infected.
Morrow also says that the health department is hearing from area health care providers who report being "overwhelmed" with reports of flu-like illness.
"If you're healthy and have mild illness, there is no need to go to your doctor's office. We really need doctors to be available to those individuals who are more seriously sick," said Dr. Morrow.
This is the fifth swine flu-related death in Onondaga County.
