Final statement helping Mother Earth

Wednesday, July 01, 2009 at 7:07 p.m.

We all know death is a part of life, but did you know you can go green all the way to the grave? That's right, for some, the grass really is greener on the other side. They're choosing green burials for their loved ones, and in turn, helping the environment.

Fort Meyers Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home is one of just two funeral homes in Florida offering green burials, which use wooden or wicker caskets, no embalming fluids, steel caskets, or concrete burial vaults are used. And unlike cremations, no fossil fuels are consumed. In fact, your grave won't even have a permanent name marking, meaning everything, even the deceased will become one with the earth.

"In a green burial, everything is biodegradable. They're more about preserving the environment, rather than the body." said Donnell Sullivan of Fort Meyers Memorial Gardens. "As a cemetery, we are certainly looking for every way we can to preserve our land use."

Green burials may also preserve your pocketbook. They can cost up to 75 percent less than a traditional burial. Green burials aren't as damaging or wasteful to the environment, but are they appealing?  Said Sullivan "you're talking about people who are thinking about cremation and thinking about other ways to bury people. This is probably just as weird or creepy."

But green nonetheless.

Wasn't ole Micheal Jackson starting to get a bit green before they planted him? It took months to divy up the kids and the cash, right?

Just kidding!

peaceout
