SYRACUSE -- With leaves off the trees, the Syracuse leaf cleanup gets underway in earnest. Here is a news release from City Hall with more details:

On November 2, 2009, the City of Syracuse Department of Public Works will begin picking up leaves throughout the City, and continue to work in rotation until all leaves are collected.

The Department of Public Works will be starting in the Northeast quadrant, then go to the Southeast, Southwest, and Northwest quadrants, in that order. This is not done on a weekly basis like the quadrant system - it is continuous.

Leaves should be raked and placed in either free leaf bags, available at the libraries, the Department of Public Works and community centers around the City or placed in similar paper leaf bags.  The bags should be placed between the street and the sidewalk for pick up by our DPW crews.  Please do not place any leaves or bags in the street. Not only does this help keep leaves out of the sewers, but can also help prevent leaves from becoming traffic hazards, causing slippery streets or clogging street drains which can lead to water and ice in the streets for motorists.

Leaf piles can be a safety hazard for children at this time of year.  It is important to get the leaves off the street, out of the sewers and in biodegradable bags

Because plastic bags can not be recycled with the leaves, residents are reminded that they should not use plastic bags for their leaves.  Leaf bags are for leaves only and should not be used for other yard waste or garbage.

The Department of Public Works will recycle the biodegradable bags into mulch.  The mulch will be made available free of charge for use in lawns and gardens. Thank you and have a safe leaf raking season.
