SYRACUSE -- In this week's My School report, Fowler High School brought us into their Junior Court, a unique program which helps students of all ages.
Here’s how the court works: The school's business law class covers all of the aspects of a trial that you would see in a working courtroom. From the defense, to the prosecution, to judges, and even a bailiff, The Fowler Junior Court defends and prosecutes freshmen students who have gotten in disciplinary trouble.
If a student gets in trouble, that student has a chance to defend him or herself. That student also gets to hear from peers what they did wrong, and what they need to do in the situation. A typical suspension may turn into a written letter and a student realizing what they did wrong. For the upperclassmen who run the court, they get to experience what it is like to participate in a courtroom setting, an opportunity that could eventually become a career for students interested in criminal justice.
