When immigrants were flocking to the shores of this country and making their way to Syracuse in the early 1900s, Joseph Farone came to Syracuse on the advice of a friend that there was a need for an Italian Funeral Director in this community.

With a diploma from Renuard School for Embalming of New York City and a license to be an embalmer and undertaker from the State of New York, Joseph Farone began to serve the Italian Community. From the beginning in the early 1900s until his death in 1955 Mr. Farone saw his needs grow from serving not only the immigrants but the entire community.

Joseph Farone, founder of Farone & Son, Inc. Funeral Home lived through the 1917 influenza that struck the city, World War I, the depression, and World War II. He was an innovator in the funeral profession from equipment for the funeral home to the preparing of the human remains.

He would often recall the days when funerals were done completely in the home, even the embalming. His means of advertising and goodwill were done with his guitar. He would attend weddings and baptisms to play and sing the native songs for the Italian immigrants.

After World War II the emphasis from the funeral in the private home was changing to the funeral in a funeral home. To better serve the community Farone and his son, Joseph Farone, Jr. saw the need to acquire a new funeral home.

They purchased the home of Charles E. Cooney on 723 James St. when James St. was the citys top residential district. Farone & Son, Inc. which is still located at 723 James St. saw the street go from the main residential area to now what has become the Avenue of Syracuse.

Now Farone & Son, Inc., in its third generation and again to meet and serve the city of Syracuse, has acquired land on the northeast corner of Park and Court Sts, to construct Syracuses newest, most complete, and modern funeral home. The completion is set for late 1974.
