Questions & Answers
Question

What separates Nick Orso's from its' competition?

Answer

The autobody trade was a cottage industry that evolved out of the old blacksmith shops of the 1800's. No formal schooling was available as the artisan trade grew to accommodate the automobiles that populated the roads became damaged needing repair. A trade generally passed down from Father to Son in recent generations. Today the trade includes special training and equipment requiring shops to become highly sophisticated businesses. Facilities like ours can easily be multi-million-dollar investments.

Many collision shops today are owned by out of town companies and managed by Wall Street investment firms, like many other trades developing the mega-store theory of business. Fast, cookie cutter repairs meant to accommodate insurance companies' profiles of loss control. These shops deeply discount repairs by minimizing cost through the use of offshore and junkyard parts and cut rate labor practices that often overlook damage and disregard any automobiles' built in safety systems or your vehicle's resale value.

Why are we different?? Nick Orso's Body Shop is locally owned and supports many Syracuse community programs (see our community service page). Nick's was founded over 50 years ago in a 3-bay repair shop on Syracuse's north side. The skill passed from Father to Son and after two generations, we've become one of the largest truly independent family-owned collision shops in Central New York. While most shops in CNY are controlled by insurance companies and disregard a consumer's rights, we support our customers from the first call.

From the first call we provide towing services and substitute transportation. Our process of handling claims is structured with a goal in sight. We have knowledge of the laws and regulations and back it up with legal support from attorneys ready to answer questions or take action if we feel our customers' rights are threatened. Nick's maintains our commitment. In 50 years our motto has not wavered. We intend to provide "The Finest in Collision Repair and Painting Services".

We follow manufacturer guidelines whenever possible, which allow us to complete a safe, proper repair. Our recommended repair affords us the ability to offer a limited warranty against defects in workmanship for as long as you own your vehicle.

Handling insurance claims can be a taxing experience. No law requires an insurance company to educate you on how to collect money from them or wade through the claim maze. From the moment we get involved, we assess our mutual goals and work to complete the project in the most effective way.

Our goal is to deliver a quality product we both can be proud of. Job #1 is to see that appearance, function and safety are restored. Your family's safety is never negotiable at Nick Orso's.

It is our intention to have you as our customer for life. Our customers become our best salespeople!

Question

What do you contribute to your community?

Answer

An important part of our success is the support of our loyal friends and customers. Annually through many worthwhile causes we give our time and financial support in hope a difference is made. While we admire the tireless efforts of all community service organizations and the many volunteers, we all have pet projects. We wish we could support each and every one, and seeing the organizations listed below I think we support our fair share!!! It is our position to first support the efforts of our customers; next we support efforts where ethical sense leads us.

Our door is always open to listen to legitimate efforts whether it is funding Girl Scout Cookies or being a Boy Scout Pine Wood Derby Judge. We sponsor Youth Go-Cart Racing, Junior Hockey Teams, and help fund Dewitt T-Ball and Softball Sports with uniforms and playing field fencing; The Heart Association is a recipient of auction items as is The Cancer Society and Make-A-Wish Foundation. The Diabetes Association - Vera House has occasionally received matching dollar for dollar donations. We support Hospice and Francis House with financial contributions.

We support the efforts of LeMoyne College, Onondaga Community College and Morrisville College, with time and mentoring;  Syracuse University Sports and Jim Boehiem’s Coaches vs. Cancer through sponsorships, donations, public speaking and mentoring. Yes... those basketballs in the back court have our name on them!!!! A Five Dollar donation and a perfect 25 Foot jump-shot is all you need to get one, while they last!! We lend space and meeting rooms to The Onondaga and NYS Medical Assistants Association and speak at The Onondaga-Madison B.O.C.E.S. Career Days. We were a guest speaker for the Syracuse Dentists Association monthly meeting.

We offer continuing support to the Onondaga Traffic Safety Council as a Board Member from 1997-2005 and continue to assist them with safe driving radio spots. We often speak at Manlius Pebble Hill School's Driver Education-Scared Straight Night. Our 36 Hours of Music on 105.9 FM at Christmas is completely geared toward Stop DWI Awareness. Our Radio Show on Monday Mornings on TK-99 (Gomez & Dave) provides questions and answers to listeners and the "Classic Collision." Our TK-99 Stop DWI Show, raised awareness by measuring blood levels as Mike Orso drank one 6 ounce glass of wine per hour under the supervision of the NYS Police. After 2 hours and two drinks, Mikes blood alcohol level was above .08!! Believe what experts say. DWI penalties are severe. DON'T DRINK and DRIVE!!!

Our radio and billboards support efforts of the N.Y.S. Trooper's Stop DWI Efforts and ZERO-Tolerance Road Checkpoints programs and the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Youth Drivers Watch Programs. The Syracuse Police and most Local Police agencies all benefit from our DWI awareness ads. The Syracuse Fire Department has used cars and vans we obtain to complete rescue training and continues to use links we set up to obtain cars from insurance companies to continue safety training for EMS personnel.

We’ve spoken at the Syracuse City Schools’ Internship and Career Days and participate in Central Technical Continuing Education Internship Programs. We participate in high school Stop DWI Programs with Prom Night displays and displays at the NYS State Fair of wrecked cars, accident reenactment and rescue scenes. We include Stopped School Bus Awareness with our radio ads in late summer and fall with dollars and time.

We’ve given away over 100 Free Baby Seats to families in need and support programs for proper baby seat use and installation. We gave up our billboard space for Click-It-Or-Ticket banners. We speak at Mothers Against Driving Drunk (MADD) seminars. We have lent our time and effort to The Prevention Network for teen anti-substance abuse programs; We gave our support to The Holy Virgin Mary School - our local neighborhood Church - that works with inner city children. Our immediate neighbor, The First Presbyterian Church, whose building is a landmark over 100 years old, sits next door. Our parking lot and our financial support are called upon often. We also support our other neighbors, The AIDES Resource Center.

Our goal is to give back and make a difference, we hope it helps.  We were given a Community Service Award in 2004 for Outstanding Support of the Stop DWI Program. In Honor of my Father we gave a $5000 endowment to Manlius Pebble-Hill School for the “NICK ORSO-BODY SHOP” workout room. A plaque marks the room as a place to, “BUILD BODY AND MIND” in honor of NICK ORSO. My Father loved kids and would have smiled to see that. We sponsor and support the Syracuse Corvette Club. For years we offered the use of our grounds for VETTES-N-BARBEQUE. As many as 100 beautiful Corvettes graced our lot on some sunny Father’s Days along with overflowing food from the smoker ala the Dinosaur Bar-b-que! We are club sponsors of the CNY Region Porsche Club, the All Ford-Mustang Club, and even the GTO Club of Maine!

For many years we worked in the Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair (I-CAR) obtaining lifetime recognition for our efforts in technician training and education in the CNY Region. We were recognized for our involvement in I-CAR Gold Class development. We are lifetime members of the Society of Collision Repair Specialists. We are members of the Auto Rebuilders Association of Greater Syracuse and The New York State Auto Collision Technicians Association and The Coalition for Collision Repair Equality, The Insurance Consumer Advocate Network (I-CAN) and The Assured Performance Network.
