BINGHAMTON (AP) -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency has awarded nearly $20 million to an upstate New York school district to replace an elementary school flooded by Tropical Storm Lee last year.

U.S. Rep. Maurice Hinchey, D-NY, announced Friday that FEMA has awarded $19.7 million to the Binghamton City School District to replace MacArthur Elementary School. FEMA will cover about 75 percent of the rebuilding project, with New York state picking up the remaining 25 percent.

The school was inundated by several feet of water when the Susquehanna River overflowed its banks in September 2011.

MacArthur remains closed. Students have been attending classes in two former Catholic schools in the Binghamton area.

A completion date for the new school has yet to be determined.
