Allergies can often trigger an asthma attack as well. That’s why the two are often linked together. When an allergen such as pollen or mold spores enters the lungs, “allergic asthma” can be the next episode for a sufferer to experience. In addition to allergies, asthma has several other triggers:
1) Infections: colds, flu, sinus infections.
2) Exercise: more common in children. This should not deter people away from exercising. Your doctor can provide you with a customized plan.
3) Weather: cold air and changes in temperature.
4) Tobacco smoke
5) Air pollution
6) Other allergens: i.e. dust mites, pets, foods
7) Dust
8) Strong odors from chemical products
9) Emotions: crying, yelling, laughing hard, anxiety
10) Medicines: including beta blocker drugs used to treat conditions such as high blood pressure, migraines, or glaucoma
Now that you know what can cause an asthma attack, what can you do to prevent, or limit them from occurring?
1) Don’t smoke and stay away from second-hand smoke.
2) Get an air purifier to clean the air in your home.
3) Be careful what you eat. Some of the most common types of food that trigger asthma are milk, eggs, nuts, and seafood.
4) Stay away from MSG (monosodium glutamate). It is a food additive that can trigger asthma.
5) Don't use aspirin. Use acetaminophen instead.
6) Make sure you use your inhaler correctly if you use one. Don't allow the puff of medication to hit your tongue. It has to go into the lungs to be effective.
7) Caffeine can help. Drink a couple of cups of strong coffee, hot chocolate, or eat a couple of chocolate bars.
8) Take vitamin B6.
9) Honey is one of the most common home remedies for asthma. Hold a jar under your nose and inhale the air that comes in contact with it.
10) Lemon is a fruit found beneficial in the treatment of asthma.
By taking these preventative measures, you may be able to reduce the risk of experiencing allergic asthma.
