Question What is the difference between Marble and Granite? Answer Both are natural stones quarried from the Earth. Granite is a very hard stone created deep in the Earth, formed from crystalized minerals under extremely high pressure and temperature. Marble starts out as sediment- shells, plant matter, silt, and even animal skeletons. This super hot mass starts to rise after millions of years of resting on the bottom of bodies of what, it solidifies as it cools into a hard stone known as Marble. Question Does my countertop need to be sealed? Answer Granite sealing and resealing is important because it is a naturally porous stone. The pores in Granite slabs and the spaces between the crystals in the surface are filled with sealant without a trace being left on the outer surface when the job is done right. Regular maintenance keeps the kitchen countertop shiny. We do have the option of lifetime sealing! Question How do I care for my new countertop? Answer Marble- A soft, clean sponge with lukewarm water should be used to clean the marble, taking care that the sponge is barely damp. It doesn't take much water to clean a marble countertop or other surface. After drying the marble with a clean cloth, it should be buffed gently until it shines again. If cleaning with the damp sponge is no longer sufficient because the marble surface has become extremely dirty, a small amount of dry borax and a clean damp cloth can be used. Sometimes cleaning marble can dull the surface, in which case a commercial marble polish can be used to restore the shine it once knew. Make sure to mix the proper amount of water into the marble polish, and always use a clean, dry cloth when gently rubbing the surface. Buffing the marble to a perfect shine again will make it appear just as it did when it was brand new. With this kind of attention on a fairly regular basis, marble countertops, floors, tables, and mantels should last a lifetime.
Granite- Granite countertops are very hard and can withstand a hot liquid being spilled on them, but polished surfaces are more delicate. No granite countertop should be used as a regular cutting surface. Home cooks should also avoid acidic foods such as lemon juice, vinegar, and soft drinks because they can etch the surface. Harsh cleaning products or abrasive cleansers should also be avoided; a small amount of warm water with a ph balanced dishwarming liquid should be used instead. Cooks should also avoid dragging pots, pans, or appliances across the stone because the different minerals might crack slightly. Dragging something across the granite countertop might scratch the polished surface, which in turn allows more stains. In addition to annual resealing, regular polishing will also keep the granite finishing gleaming. Question Will my countertop have a seam? Answer Most countertops require at least one seam to be installed properly and also because slabs come so big. Some, depending on size and shape will not have any seams. The visibility of the seam is affected by the pattern and color of the stone. Seams are joined with epoxy and the joined area is meticulously smoothed. Question How long does the process take from purchase to installation? Answer The time can vary. Depending on availability of the stone you have chosen for your project and the work load. Usually the process takes 2-3 weeks but can take up to 4 weeks from order to install. You can call the store and speak to a sales person for more information. Question How long will my natural stone countertop last? Answer If you take proper care of your countertops they will last for generations. Natural stone has been quarried for centuries and some are as old as the Earth. Question Do you have free samples? Answer We have samples of granites and marbles in our Cicero showroom. We would also love to give you a free estimate. Stop by and don't forget to bring your measurements!
