ALBANY (AP) -- The New York State Thruway Authority is proposing to increase tolls by 45 percent for bigger trucks with three or more axles.

Next comes more study and public hearings before the board can enact the higher fees.

The authority board says Wednesday the increase is needed to help pay for repairs and shore up finances as the state prepares to replace the Tappan Zee Bridge.

The New York State Motor Truck Association says toll increases are generally a concern, but the group understands the need to replace the Tappan Zee Bridge.

Tolls on the 641-mile highway from Buffalo to New York City were last raised in 2010.

The toll for a three-axle truck traveling from Buffalo to New York City is about $88. That could increase to $127.
