MANLIUS -- Thousands of homes and businesses were without power for up to two and a half hours Wednesday morning, according to a report from National Grid.

The utility company says at its peak 12,000 customers were affected by the outage, which was concentrated in eastern Onondaga and western Madison counties. National Grid spokesman Patrick Stella says the outage was caused by a faulty piece of equipment at a substation in Manlius.

National Grid says the power was rerouted and service to most homes was restored around 9:00 a.m.

The first outages were reported around 6:30 a.m.
