Syracuse Community Health Center's (SCHC) mission is to provide quality health care services to all individuals with a commitment to those who might otherwise be excluded from the health care system while remaining cost effective, efficient and competitive.
Founded in 1978 by Dr. Ruben Cowart, Syracuse Community Health Center is the result of a dream to provide health care and employment opportunities to community members, especially to those of meager backgrounds. A dentist recruited to work in a downtown Syracuse health care center, Dr. Cowart opened SCHC after that original center closed. Today SCHC has branched into four corporations and serves as the primary health care provider for more than 40,000 active users with an annual budget of more than $73 million, 90% of which is returned to the community.
Syracuse Community Health Center is made up of 15 neighborhood-based Health Centers located throughout Onondaga County. SCHC staff of over 100 Board Certified Providers and support personnel make up a comprehensive professional resource enabling Syracuse Community Health Center to offer a remarkably wide range of primary and urgent medical, dental and behavioral health services to the greater Syracuse community.
Accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, SCHC has positioned itself as a guardian for community health and a provider of economic opportunity.
