SYRACUSE --
As the saying goes, everything old is new again! One of the hottest trends in music is also one the oldest. Sales of vinyl records were up an incredible 124% in 2008, and that's after years of increasing numbers.
Anthony Battaglia says that since he got into vinyl, he's stopped buying CDs and mp3s. "I don't even mess with them. It's like fast food compared to filet mignon."
When Soundgarden recently moved to a new store in Armory Square, the ability to expand their record selection was one of the considerations. "A lot of the customers who buy vinyl, only buy vinyl,” said Ron Cicoria from Soundgarden.
Why the vinyl comeback? Fans say it's because vinyl sounds better than mp3s. Most digital music is highly compressed to fit into portable files and there is usually a significant loss in quality.
"A lot of the sounds you get with vinyl you don't get with the digital,” said Brad Matthews as he scanned the records at the Soundgarden store. “They're just not there. I don't know what happens, it's something that's just not there."
With more demand for records, there are a lot more being released.
"There's so much more selection now,” says Battaglia. “In the 90s, there really wasn't anything but now, you don't even know where to begin."
Some new releases on vinyl understand you can't take your turn table with you everywhere you go, so they also include a code for an mp3 download of the album with your purchase.
