SYRACUSE -- On Tuesday night, at about 7:00, the Syracuse Police Department says in a release that they responded to a complaint of a possible burglary in progress in the 300 block of Apple Street.

Officers Rick Raymond and Mike Shannon came to the area and say they saw a man standing in the driveway at 308 Apple Street.  The man, who was later identified as 17-year-old Alex Hines of 183 Lakeview Avenue in Syracuse, matched the description given of the possible burglary suspect.

The officers say that when they started to approach Hines he ran and was apprehended after a short foot chase.  He was taken into custody without incident.

Police say that they found .22 caliber ammunition on Hines when they took him into custody and that when they searched the area where Hines was initially seen, they found a sawed off .22 caliber rifle.

Hines has been charged with criminal possession of a weapon.  He was put in the Justice Center and is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday in Syracuse City Court.

The investigation showed that a burglary did not occur, according to Syracuse Police.
