NEW YORK (AP) -- New York City officials say new statistics underscore a correlation between sugary drinks and obesity.

They were issued a day before the city starts enforcing a unique cap on the size of such beverages.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and health officials announced the findings Monday. They say nine of the 10 neighborhoods with the highest obesity rates also were highest rates in consumption of non-diet sodas and other sugar-sweetened drinks.

The American Beverage Association had no immediate response. Industry groups have said the city is singling out soda when other factors also play a role in obesity.

The city pointed to other studies in setting a 16-ounce size cap for some sugary drinks sold at restaurants and other eateries. It's set to take effect Tuesday.

Opponents are challenging it in court.
