AUBURN -- This week's "My School" segment features Auburn High School's journalism, technology, and theatre departments.
In Auburn, students have quite the advantage when it comes to deciding what facet of journalism they want to study. If print journalism is their thing, the student newspaper "The Lake Ave. Times" is an award-winning enterprise, having won the Newhouse Gold Medal. It certainly doesn't look like your run-of-the-mill high school paper either, with plenty of pictures and a wide variety of topics covered.
The same could be said for the Auburn High School television station, which has content aired on TV in the Auburn region for Time Warner customers on Saturday and Monday nights. The television program gives practical experience to students who want to learn the craft of being an on-air personality, or taking care of the ever-important behind the scenes production work.
The technology club showed us their pride and joy - repairing snowmobiles, many of which were brought in by members of the community that needed their sleds fixed. No doubt, all students involved are learning how to take care of snowmobiles whether they want to repair them for a living, or just be able to maintain their own sleds. But it's not just about learning about repairs. Teacher Ian Burke is adamant about teaching the students, most of whom ride sleds themselves, about the rules of the trails, and how to be safe out in the field.
The theatre department has many different aspects to it, but one group, the drama club, is hard at work for its upcoming musical. The production hits the stage in February. For more on that and the rest of the groups featured, click the video icon.
