SYRACUSE -- Hundreds in Central New York shaved their heads Sunday to support kids with cancer.

The annual St. Baldrick's event was held at  Kitty Hoynes in Downtown Syracuse on Sunday. More than 500 people signed up to go bald, after raising money and awareness for childhood cancer. Each year, 160,000 kids worldwide are diagnosed with it, making it the number 1 killer of kids in the U.S. and Canada.

"I shaved my head for my sister because she has cancer and I'm supporting her," said 11-year-old Katelyn Carbonaro. "She's going to be like you really did this for me?"

Katelyn's sister Ashley was diagnosed with lymphoma in December. She's now undergoing chemotherapy and is losing her hair. But being bald doesn't make her different...anymore.

"She's going to be like you look good!" said 13-year-old Tayah Carbonaro who shaved her head for her cousin Ashley. "she's one of my favorite cousins and I love her and really hope she gets better."

"She's a really good friend of mine. I thought what better way to help her than to shave my head?" said Lawrence Karl.

"She's so close to me and I thought why not shave if for her? If I can show any support and how much I love her then why not do this?" said Ashley's friend Hannah Root.

In the last 7 years, The St. Baldrick's Foundation has given out more than $78-million in grants. Money that it says can save lives.

Lindsey Stefanic raised about $5,000 to support her neice Ariel who has cancer.  "She's 4 year old and she was diagnosed when she was 2. She's lost her hair several times so I shaved my head for her," she said. "I think she'd laugh at me right now."
