MADISON COUNTY -- The Madison County Task Force on Bath Salts called upon the Governor and State Legislature to enact tougher laws against synthetic drugs earlier this month.
At the meeting on August 9, the task force agreed to draft a letter to send to Albany. That letter was made public Monday morning.

The letter, addressed to Governor Cuomo, was signed by: Dean G. Skelos, Majority Leader, New York State Senate; Sheldon Silver, Speaker, New York State Assembly; New York Senator David Valesky; and New York State Assemblyman Williams Magee.
The letter says, in part: "There exists a misconception that it is legal to sell and possess these drugs because it is not yet a crime to do so under New York State law. Price and packing make the product appealing to younger people and those who are abusing other drugs."
The officials ask Gov. Cuomo for assistance, writing: "As a group, we are asking for your assistance in calling the legislature back to consider passing bill S6694A that was passed by the Senate. Currently we have little recourse to address the sale or possession of bath salts on a local level because presently there exists only federal law and the recently enacted Public Health Law violation level offense to govern bath salts."
