Bath salts are making headlines in Central New York and across the nation. There were multiple bizarre incidents in Central New York this past year including a Munnsville woman who, while high on on bath salts, was tased by State Police after she tried to beat up her young child and one where a Syracuse man threatened a five-year-old boy with a knife.
A discussion about Synthetic drugs and the effects were the subject of the Dr. Phil show Wednesday afternoon.
Dr. Phil called upon a local expert from Crouse Hospital to help him stage an intervention.
Dr. Elizabeth Berry is a Clinical Psychologist and an Addiction Expert at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse.
"We've seen increasing numbers of patients exhibiting very bizarre, strange behaviors, including paranoia, violence, and very unpredictable behavior," says Dr. Berry. "We're not sure of the long terms effects of this, on people's brains and bodies."
In 2011, poison control centers took more than 5,000 phone calls from people who were either high on the substances, or worried about a loved one who was. That's twenty times higher than the amount of calls taken just one year earlier.
Law enforcement agencies across Central New York met in Canastota Wednesday to strategize about how they can stomp out these substances in our community.
