SYRACUSE -- Police say weather likely involved in an 11-car crash on Interstate 81 northbound this afternoon.

The first crash happened around 12:50 p.m. on I-81 north between I-690 westbound and Pearl Street. That set off a chain-reaction. In all, Syracuse Police say there were four two-car crashes and one three-car crash.

Two people were taken to Upstate University Hospital as a precaution including a 6-year-old girl.

There was another crash just after 1 p.m. on the 81 north exit ramp to 690 eastbound. Police say one car slammed into a guiderail. The driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Police say slippery roads and unsafe speed were to blame for the crashes.
