SYRACUSE -- Several local organizations, including Onondaga Community College, OCM BOCES, St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center, and other local businesses will team with the American Heart Association to celebrate National Eating Healthy Day on Wednesday.
National Eating Healthy Day attempts to raise awareness about the importance of making healthy food choices, including incorporating healthier foods, including fresh fruits and vegetables, fish and other healthy choices. It encourages people to make small daily changes and reinforces the importance of good nutrition, as well as being physically active.
Events to celebrate the day include culinary arts students at Onondaga Community College providing provideing healthy cooking demonstrations from noon until 1 PM. Also at OCC, the soda machines will be shut off and the food services department will provide a healthy menu for the day.
At OCM BOCES, culinary arts students will cook healthy foods in the cafeteria and cafe and at St. Joseph's soda sales will be suspended, fryers turned off and menus will feature healthy options such as low-cholesterol eggs and whole grain breads.
On National Eating Healthy Day, the American Heart Association reminds everyone to be on the lookout for the “Salty Six;” the top sources for sodium in today’s diet: breads and rolls, cold cuts and cured meats, pizza, poultry, soup, and sandwiches.
