OWEGO (AP) -- A wake is being held for a volunteer firefighter who lost his life battling a house fire in upstate New York.

Thirty-four-year-old Matthew Porcari died Monday night after responding to a house fire in Newark Valley, N.Y.

The Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin reports that about 1,000 people were expected to attend the wake, being held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at a middle school in Owego.

A funeral Mass will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the same location.

Porcari fell into the basement of the burning home when its floor collapsed.
