On the eve of the election there is little left for the candidates to do. If they have run a well organized, well financed campaign they are focusing at this point on getting supporters to the polls. They have a network of volunteers who are making sure members of their party turn out. The message is out. The appearances are over. It's now up to the voters to make a choice.
In the wild and crazy race for the 23rd congressional district in Northern New York the feverish pitch of appearances by celebrity politicians has escalated right up to the finish. The short run nature of the special election has created intensity beyond the norm. The television spots have become so ubiquitous it's hard to even pay attention to them any longer.
Tonight it was Senator Fred Thompson stumping for the conservative Doug Hoffman. Vice President Joe Biden rallied for democrat Bill Owens. Dede Scozzafava - she's now the republican who's backing the democrat and enduring tongue lashings from the right side of her own party.
That battle has made the race for Syracuse mayor seem like a game of hopscotch. Voter registration widely favoring democrats gives Stephanie Miner the glow of being the favorite, but republican Steve Kimatian and conservative Otis Jennings are hoping to spring an election night surprise. That’s what brings anticipation to the day – the unknown.
What do you think of this campaign in this off election year? Are you sick of the ads? Did you want to know more about a candidate that you weren’t able to discover? I would love to hear what you think on this election eve.
