Fall officially starts Saturday, September 22 and temperatures are starting to fall, but the Oswego County Public Health Director says mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus are still present at test sites around the county. The county is urging residents to continue taking measures to protect themselves against mosquito bites.

As long as the weather cooperates, the Oswego County Health Department will conduct aerial spraying tonight. It will begin after 6:45 p.m. and will continue until the target area has been treated.

More aerial spraying to kill mosquitoes is planned in a central New York county where Eastern equine encephalitis was found in one of the insects tested by state health experts last week.

The Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus has been found in a sample of mosquitos collected last week in the village of Central Square. The Oswego County Health Department was notified by the State Health Department late Tuesday afternoon and is requesting the New York State Department of Health to issue a declaration of "imminent threat to public health" in Oswego County.

A horse in Richland has died after contracting eastern equine encephalitis, EEE. The Oswego County Health Department told CNY Central that testing sites in the Toad Harbor Big Bay Swamp area in the town of Hastings are continuing to produce positive results of EEE.
