NORTH SYRACUSE -- On Friday, Officials in North Syracuse are one step closer to possibly combining their police department operations with the Onondaga County Sheriff's Department.
A few months ago, North Syracuse Mayor John Heindorf asked for a consolidation study to be performed. On Friday, he sat with Onondaga County officials to discuss the results. The mayor says he can't release whether or not the village would save any money because he needs to report the findings to board members first.
In 2008, the Town of Clay voted to merge its police department with the Onondaga County Sheriff's Department. Neighbors there were told they would average a savings of about $50.00 a year on their taxes. While Mayor John Heindorf says the North Syracuse idea is still in its infancy, it could come to life as the Village battles with budget cutbacks from Albany. Heindorf says, "We're just exploring this and planning this, and just seeing if its possible if we can save any money or not save any money but the chickens are gonna come home to roost in a year and a half we're already seeing our revenues diminish this year."
Mayor Heindorf says when a decision is made whether to move forward with the proposal, it will be put up for a public hearing, before going to the public for a vote.
