From Cynthia Scott of OMC Financial Services:

Company earning results are a hodgepodge of numbers - know what they mean!

What to look for when a company reports its earnings:

**Look for top line earnings growth - has the company had more sales?
**Check what the company did last quarter or last year; has there been significant improvement in their balance sheet and earnings?
**What did the company say about future earning projects - Johnson and Johnson had fewer sales, but said earnings were going to be better in the future
**Were earnings jazzed up by cutting employees or shutting down facilities?
**Were there extraordinary charge offs - Bank of America charged off more bad loans because consumers couldn't pay.
**The decrease in the dollar value will help the earnings of companies that do a great deal of business internationally - IBM is an example
**If you only own mutual funds or an ETF (Exchange Traded Fund), make sure you know what companies are in the portfolio.  You don't want to own one of these investments where most of the companies either    had bad earnings or don't see earnings improving - the top ten companies in the portfolio are usually helpful.
