SYRACUSE -- A new grocery store will finally fill the former Wegmans building on Pond Street next week.
A spokesperson from TOPS confirmed that there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, January 15.
Wegmans put the building up for sale last year.
Generally, Wegmans does not sell to competitors, spokesperson Evelyn Carter said at the time, but she said they knew there was a need for a grocery story on the north side.
"Although our policy is typically not to sell to competitors, in this instance, based on the situation on the North side of Syracuse, we have made an exception and will accept proposals from anyone who is interested in purchasing the building," said Carter.
The new TOPS location has a seven year tax incentive that will keep them serving the community for years to come.
