SYRACUSE (AP) -- An aluminum casting foundry that's one of the Syracuse area's oldest manufacturers has notified New York state that it plans to shut down, putting nearly 90 people out of work.

Local media outlets report that Oberdorfer LLC filed a layoff notice with the Department of Labor saying it would close its foundry in suburban DeWitt on May 3, eliminating 86 jobs.

The company cited economic reasons for closing the foundry, which had been in business since the late 19th century.

The Post-Standard of Syracuse reports that some of Oberdorfer's biggest customers, including the company that makes Cessna airplanes, canceled large orders as the recession cut into their own sales.
