ONONDAGA COUNTY -- Chief John Balloni, with the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Department, told the Onondaga County Legislature’s Public Safety Committee on Wednesday that they are struggling with wait time for pistol permits.

The wait is about 14 months from applying for a pistol permit until the processing begins.

According to New York State law, obtaining a pistol permit requires a criminal background check, character references, a hand gun safety course and other requirements.

Balloni says they have several extra people working to process the permits in hopes of relieving the backlog.

He says they are looking forward to a new computerized system that will alleviate the wait times.

In it’s last meeting, the County Legislature made a commitment to eventually bring the wait times down to two 2 months.

The pistol licenses in Onondaga County are administered by the Sheriffs Department.
