NORTH SYRACUSE -- New York State is now requiring alarms in new commercial and residential swimming pools as a way to reduce the number of child drownings. New regulations that took effect June 13th require pools to have surface or sub-surface alarms that go off when the sensors detect that somebody is in the water. The alarms are required for pools built or substantially modified after December 14, 2006.
The alarms are priced around $250 for in-ground pools, $199 for above-ground pools. Cannon Pools and Spas in North Syracuse expects to sell 600 to 800 of them this year with the new pools the company installs. The best advice - look for the label on the alarm box that says the alarm is up to ASTM safety standards.
