Politics may be the order of the day, a month before elections, but in 1983 it was anything but business as usual:
Syracuse area congressional incumbent George Wortley was telling reporters he could not talk about national security.
In the Onondaga County Sheriff's race, Waymon Henson was accusing incumbent John Dillon of using civil deputies for illegal campaigning. Our Jerry Barsha was covering the story, which would see Henson accused and actually taken to a jury trial on political corruption charges--the jury found him not guilty.
Central New Yorkers were also awakened, on October 6, 1983, by a forceful earthquake.  Rochelle Casella covered the story, and found that over 200 people called Syracuse Police to find out if a plane had broken the sound barrier.  Then PIO, now Phoenix, NY Police Chief Rod Carr said there was genuine community concern.
Also this week in October, the Onondaga County Legislature was debating property tax hikes as part of a new budget.
Tom Miller was our evening news anchor, Jim Kenyon the reporter covering the story, live.
And, even 25 years ago we were covering gas stories: Jackie Robinson, out at long gas lines from the University Hill to Erie Boulevard, as a radio station was letting cars fill up, for $1.01 a gallon---people were looking at $20 for a tankful, a low enough price to wait in line for 3 hours.
