(AP) -- A new poll shows that New York voters overwhelmingly oppose Governor David Paterson's proposed "obesity tax" on non-diet soda and other sugary drinks.

The Quinnipiac University poll released this week finds that by a margin of 60 percent to 37 percent, New Yorkers don't believe the tax should be charged. Even 58 percent of those who said they prefer diet soft drinks over regular sodas also said they oppose the tax.

Fifty-four percent of Democrats polled said they oppose the tax, while 72 percent of Republicans said they're against it, and 59 percent of independent voters said they oppose the tax.

Why Stop at Sweetened Soda

Posted by J Ratner, NY - Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at 12:59 p.m.

I think this is descrimination against the overweight. It'sort of like charging more for large print books bought by the legally blind.
Soda, in general, is already taxed, and this is a crazy objective, Why not add a "Bakery tax" to all cake and cookies, and a "Chubby tax"to candy, and "Fatty tax" to steak and eggs due to high cholesterol? Soon it won't be just businesses leaving New York.

Pay by the Pound

A scale should be installed in front of cashier in order to calculate the tax.
Us fit 'n trim folk should not have to subsidize blubber-guts and tub-o-lard.
It's bad enough already. I'm sure that somehow I am paying for these fat, smelly people, either through additional medical insurance costs or something.

If this becomes reality, we will completely stop buying all soda!!

This is completely absurd!! If you want an obesity tax then tax consumers at McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's etc... Another fine example of how to push people out of New York State.
