BUFFALO (AP) -- A former Buffalo-area train engineer whose career was ended by a fall has been awarded more than $930,000.

John Murphy was attempting to start a locomotive engine in CSX railroad's Niagara Yard when an oil spill caused him to fall off the engine. Murphy suffered multiple neck, shoulder and head injuries in the August 2003 fall.

Murphy's attorneys say he can walk, but will need medical care for the rest of his life. The 69-year-old former Hamburg resident now lives in Florida with his wife.

Following a nearly three-week trial in state Supreme Court in Buffalo, Murphy was awarded $930,401 on Thursday.

CSX officials did not return calls for comment Friday.
