SYRACUSE -- Excellus BlueCross BlueShield announced Thursday that the company has laid off employees as part of a restructuring plan. The following is a news release from Excellus BlueCross BlueShield regarding the layoffs:
Excellus BlueCross BlueShield announced 17 employees were laid off Thursday in Central New York as the health insurer realigns its competitive position. The job cuts represent a small percentage of the health plan's more than 3,600 workers throughout upstate New York and are part of a reorganization to achieve greater efficiencies.
Employees being displaced today are being given opportunities to apply for other positions within the corporation for which they may be qualified.
Last year, the company began taking steps to curb administrative spending without resorting to any layoffs -- including restrictions on hiring and promotions, an elimination of open positions and an early retirement incentive program -- that resulted in a reduction of nearly 530 positions within the health plan or a 13 percent reduction from a fully staffed workforce.
