SYRACUSE --
It's in an unassuming building on Syracuse's West Side, just down the park from Blodget School. Inside are crammed all kinds of home remodeling items, from concrete board siding for exteriors, to window and door frames in all shapes and sizes, to paint, powertools, sinks, stoves, kitchen cabinets and bathroom fixtures in all shapes, sizes and colors....many at a third of retail, or less.
"We deconstruct old houses," says Habitat Executive Director Suzanne Williams, "so we have old items---hinges seem to be an item that people can't find." You can find them here, in several shapes and sizes, along with old locks and vintage, old-style keys.
Alicia Sierra Wolfe, who works in the store, says she has several customers who've redone whole homes, down to the nails, from the store.
And besides the goods, there are also services. The store manager maintains a bulletin board with offers of all kinds.
ReStore is thriving, but in desperate need of volunteers to help staff it--from helping customers to helping with unloading new goods, and maintaining inventory. Its profits go to Habitat for Humanity, which has two homes about to be finished here in Syracuse in May, and three more on the drawing board for this year.
To donate goods, or volunteer, you can call the store, on Otisco Street, at 475-9172. Or check the Syracuse Habitat for Humanity website: http://www.syracusehabitat.org/
