SYRACUSE (AP) -- Syracuse fire officials are investigating the cause of a basement explosion that forced the evacuation of a private Islamic school.
Authorities said it's too early to say whether the explosion at 3:30 p.m. Thursday was intentional or accidental. Fire investigator Lt. Ken Heffernan said there will be a thorough investigation. All 75 students were safely evacuated.
Initial reports were that a boiler exploded. School officials said they had no reason to believe it was anything but an accident. Police consulted the FBI and federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives because the school is considered a place of worship.
The Ihsan School of Excellence will be closed until the damage is repaired and the investigation concludes.
