SYRACUSE -- Coach and motivational speaker Ken Carter spent Friday talking with students in the Syracuse City School District. Carter, who made headlines when he locked his state-championship bound high school basketball team out of their gym in California in the late 90’s told students at Levy Middle School they have bright futures. Carter’s story became the inspiration for a 2005 movie called 'Coach Carter', starring Samuel L. Jackson.
In Syracuse, Carter said being poor is different than being broke. Being poor, he says, is a debilitating state of mind. Carter currently runs a school in central Texas where the school day is twelve hours long, and if students don’t finish their work during the week, they must attend school on the weekends. “It’s not about punishment.” Carter says. “I want these kids to know that we care about them, and about their schooling, and they can do great things,” he said.
