If you get sales calls and spam messages on your cell phone you are not alone. As more people are using their cell phones as their main phone line, their numbers are becoming more accessible.
Verizon District Manager in Syracuse, Scott Langley says,“If someone puts their name on a credit card application or enters a drawing at the mall with their cell phone number, the numbers could get into the wrong hands and could be sold and become part of a telemarketing phone list.”
Langley says customers should contact their cell phone carriers if they receive these calls because it is illegal for telemarketers to knowingly call cell phones. Verizon will credit customers account if they receive these phone calls and recommends customers be careful where they give the cell phone numbers.
He also says consumers should register with the "Do Not Call Registry". Legislation is in its final stages that would make the "Do Not Call Registry" a Never Call Registry which would protect consumer phone numbers indefinitely.
To register your phone number on the "Do Not Call Registry" go to the link at the bottom of the page. Or you can call the company at 1-888-382-1222.
