Mid-winter ski conditions are developing in late fall. Officially the winter season arrives this Sunday at 7:04 AM during the solstice. The sun is at it’s furthest south position in the sky and days are seeming short. This also means colder weather has an easier time invading Central New York and I love it! Forget about the fifties and rain from back on Monday. An active weather pattern, combined with some lake effect snow and cold enough temperatures to artificially make snow will make for a great launch into the big Christmas week.

With the Christmas holiday coming up next Thursday, take note that most ski areas close up shop for the day. I know I’ll be up to my ears putting together my kids' gifts like many other parents. Hopefully Santa Claus will be good to all you boys and girls out there. A couple of ski areas are giving us a gift for Wednesday, Christmas Eve day. A free lift ticket goes out to anyone who donates canned and non-perishable food that day at both Greek Peak and Toggenburg. It’s a win-win deal as you can make someone else’s holiday a little brighter and shed some pounds before heading to some parties. A nice touch done by those two resorts!

A great stocking stuffer for the holidays is the Half Off CNY Skiing Package. The only place you can find this deal is right here on CNYcentral.com. You get a lift ticket to each of seven local ski and snowboard centers to use this season. The best part, it costs only one hundred dollars. The package is worth over two hundred and forty bucks and is a great savings for us ski bums looking to ski cheap. There is a limited supply of these packages and once they are gone, you’re out of luck.

With two children and a third to be born soon, my number of ski days seems to be dropping with every season. I can remember getting over fifty per year back in my ski club/youth days. My season will finally kick into gear this weekend at Greek Peak on Saturday. If you’re out there, look for the really fast skier and say hi. Let me know how your recent trip to a local ski area has gone. Just post a comment right below this blog about your outing so other readers can hear about it. Better yet, take a digital picture and shoot it my way via email at mbrookins@CNYcentral.com.  I might show it on the WSTM NBC-3 television ski report next week!

Happy trails and happy holidays….

Ski day number one nixed because...

My wife delivered my 3rd child on Friday night. Oddly enough during a snowstorm. Nasty roads in the afternoon on the way to the Hospital. I can miss the great powder skiing out there today, cause I have the best Christmas present I could ask for this year, a perfect baby. Maybe next week...
