The Steak and Sundae in Eastwood has been closed for some time now, left to decay. It's just one of many storefronts and vacant buildings in Eastwood David Brownell walks by every day. "We've got something that neds to be torn down and ofcourse I don't know what the status of it is but it certainly detracts from the area, that's for sure," says David.
Eastwood has seen a slight boost with a new Walgreens and Pomco building. Keller Williams is also slated to undergo a major renovation. Scott Makarchuk owns Books and Memories at the corner of Woodbine and James Street. He's looking for more business, but in the way of food. Scott says, "Although we have a few good places, there's really not enough. Otherwise, we are stuck eating the same thing every day. So it's kind of nice if we could get some more healthy choices on the street."
Makarchuk just bought an empty building across the street from his bookstore. He plans to open a restaurant. The spot is one of the areas the Eastwood Neighborhood Association is trying to fix up. The other two are at North Midler. Aaron Wood is Vice President of the association and says it isn't so easy. Wood says, "We're in an economic situation right now that people are if they have leases they're staying put. If they're not trying to get new loans because they don't know where business is going."
City officials won't say what else is on the table but insist plans are in the works. There is no timeline for when they would like all of the projects to be complete.
