An additional fee adopted in this year's state budget is inspiring a lot of road rage. Starting in April 2010, all drivers in New York will be required to buy brand new license plates at $25 a set, regardless of whether they're driving a new car or not. That's $10 more than the current price. If you want to keep your same license plate number, it will cost you another $20. "Why? Why do we need new plates?" asked Larry Hughes of Onondaga Hill.

The state claims this is for safety because the reflectivity on many of the license plates issued in 2001 has worn out. But what about states like Delaware that have had the same plates since 1970? "I think it's another way for the state to get more money," said Frazier Hunt of Skaneateles.

He's absolutely right. There are 12 million registered drivers in the state, and the State Department of Motor Vehicles estimates this will bring in $129 million. Senator John DeFrancisco tells Action News the money should come from cutting spending, saying: "This is just one of more than 100 fees that were adopted in last year's budget to satisfy the insatiable desire of New York City Democrat state leaders to spend the money of hard-working New Yorkers."

License and registration fees will also go up 25%. Starting September 1st, the price of a driver's license will increase from $50 to $62.50. Drivers at the D.M.V. say the timing couldn't be worse. "With the economy and no jobs and stuff like that, and job losses, I'm on unemployment right now to tell you the truth, I can barely afford it," said Jermaine Sterling of Syracuse.

"People are hurting now, people are just scraping to get by," Hughes said. "Why should they have to buy new plates if they don't need them?"

Drivers won't have to run out and buy new plates on April 1st. The update will take place over a two-year period as drivers renew their registrations.

Just another way to suck the very essence out of our lives and our hard earned dollars

Posted by Barbara Robinson, Catskills - Friday, November 27, 2009 at 7:22 p.m.

I wrote earlier to this post regarding the new plates.I really never ceases to amaze me what goes on here in the state of NY, living here is like living in a third world country, no freedom of choice anymore, they are always coming up with new and creative ideas to tax New Yorkers. The economy grows worse every day, more and more people are out of work. Its funny when you hear people complain about being ripped off, the only ones that are being ripped off are the hardworking citizens of NY!! Its those morons up in Albany who are sucking the life out of us, any way they can.Now I can understand why so many people work off the books for cash when they can find those type of jobs,if I had my way and could find a job for cash off the books, I would gladly join the dozen others , instead of having my paycheck raped, the government stinks!!
As I saw a funny bumper sticker a while ago it said" Don't cheat!, the government hates competition!" LMAO!!! Boy that sticker said a mouthfull!!!

Enough already

Posted by Jim Jonas, Brooklyn NY - Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 10:59 a.m.

What is wrong with our government? Do they want a revolution. The waste is in the salaries of all the executives on the payroll. Every time they cant balance the budget, they go cutting services and the lower salaried employees. THAT"S NOT THE PROBLEM. The problem is all the high paid people in the government that NEVER get the axe. Get rid of them and the budget will be balanced. Heck, we might even have money left over. Go to seethroughny.com to see how much money is being wasted.

Another big reason to pack up and leave this State!!!!

Posted by Doug Watkins, Mexico, NY - Friday, November 13, 2009 at 1:06 p.m.

This, New York, tax them until they can't take it no more attitude needs to change... We don't need new plates... We need a new Governor! I personally know of three families that have packaged up shop and left NEW YORK STATE for over States because there's no jobs and there's no jobs because the people that hire can't afford to do business in this over taxed, over regulated State. Look at the Destiny Mall project a big flop why because they can't guarantee the shareholders that once built they will be able to fill all the new store space... and that leads right back to New York being over taxed and being a harder and harder place to make a living!

NO NEW PLATES

Posted by M L, Liverpool - Friday, November 13, 2009 at 12:21 a.m.

Just another NY "Let Them Eat Cake". Why do we need them??? Most of the revenue will go to the cost of getting the new plates ready....hardly nothing will be left over for what the revenu was intended for???? Maybe we should "End the Fuss" "Take the BUS" out of town (state).

We need to start voting everyone out every two years who does not perform. First things first..we want a list of all salaries and perks the people in office get. People rise up and demand accountability. the increase in license plates and everything else is for their benefits, while we have none. Get them all out.

My wife and I are on a fixed income. So we may decide not to drive so we can continue to live or continue driving and give up food or medicine or even heat. I don't see why we have to have new plates what is wrong with our plates. Get some different glue to hold our registration stickers on. Enough is enough

Retro

Posted by Charlotte Nieman, Erieville - Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at 5:43 p.m.

How very retro of the government! What a stupid waste of money. I would like to know how this is going to generate income. It is not like the license plates are free for the government to create. First, they will need to notify everyone of the new plates. They cannot rely on everyone knowing from the media; so everyone will get one or two mailings. (Remember there are costs of paper, ink, envelopes, mail costs, and someone's time.) Then, everyone will receive another mailing when it is time to renew. Then, the cost of creating the new plates (labor and raw materials). The costs go on and on. So, how much at the end of all of it is truely generated???? What a stupid waste!

License Plate

Posted by Shari Thurston, Orwell - Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at 5:15 p.m.

The colors of the new License Plates are the same color NY had in the 1970's-so why the change? We should of never changed them to begin with if we were just going to go back to the same color. Pay 25.00 to go back? and what will the money go to? not to better our streets, because even when they try it doesn't work. so we sit here, pay more money into NY because we have no other choice? What kind of government does that sound like?

Taxpayers Need to Know Facts

Posted by Connie Fowler, Fulton - Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at 1:03 p.m.

Every time Patterson comes up with a "new" way to close the budget the tax payers are going to be the ones to suffer. Last Spring he was demanding that CSEA give up the 3% raise it had in a signed contract with NYS & when they refused they were made out to be the worst people in the world. The following week he bought a $15,000. rug for his office & gave his office staff a 30% raise. Now tell me where the justice is in that. Civil Service Employees have worked for years at reduced pay, when compared to the private sector, to get the benefits & retirement that is offered by CSEA. Now to have a governor who wants it handed back to him to balance NY'S budget just because the elected officials can not work within a budget, like every working family has to in order to live is not right by any persons reasoning. Every adult needs to remember to vote next year when these legislators & senators come up for re-election & above all DO NOT vote Patterson into office - He has never been elected he got the office by DEFAULT.Contact your elected representative & tell then enough is enough in fees & taxes.

More nonsense?

Posted by Jim ,, Upstate New York - Wednesday, November 04, 2009 at 12:40 p.m.

There is a better way of getting money more fairly, without taking it from the people. How about trying to save money for the future and let the free market take care of itself. No need to spend extra money on things we don’t need or even want. Didn’t your Dad ever tell you a buck saved is money well spent. Well the state apparently gets to spend the money we saved by earning it. Taxes are necessary for state income, but not when they are this costly. People don’t think about values sometimes and what really maters, they just want more and more. Well if the state wants more they have to earn it. It is ridiculous how much money is poured into the state through taxes and still it is in way over its head in debt. It is amazing how careless the state is with its money sometimes. Don’t get me wrong New York is a great state, it has done a lot for the country, but is getting a little weird with money. I hope we don’t forget what really matters in life. These greed filled taxes aren’t making it any better. Keep praying to God and go to church for the good of all, because after all, IN GOD WE TRUST to always do good.

Too much taxes on New Yorkers!!

Posted by Lisa Cobb, Syracuse - Wednesday, November 04, 2009 at 12:16 a.m.

Elliot Spitzer was a great Governor. He made a mistake in his personal life, but he had the hearts of New Yorkers in his head. We, as New Yorkers, live in one of the most taxed states. If the current government continues to raise taxes, add fees, and impose new taxes, I am afraid that New Yorkers will leave and the state leaders will be in a very vacant state. My family lives paycheck to paycheck, and have lost an income from a lost job. I can barely afford to keep food on the table, pay the energy bills, as well as the mortgage on the house. Are we able to survive much longer? I severely doubt it. We cannot take any more. Too many kids that have left for college will not come back home to start a life here and settle down. If I could pack up and move, I would. This is enough! How about the people in Albany getting paychecks cut down like the average Joe, and see how tough it really is to make ends meet. We don't have cable tv or a lot of luxuries. I have internet to pay bills online, but that is about it. It's getting too expensive, and with Onondaga County opposing additional county fees on top of the state DMV fees, why would anyone want to raise a family in New York? I live here because my husband has employment here. There is no sense to more and more spending and taxing in Albany. Cut un-needed jobs, take less pay, re-work the budget, but don't take it out on the common people of the state. We cannot afford it anymore!!

What to tax next? Hummmmm......

Posted by Nancy Windy, Baldwinsville - Tuesday, November 03, 2009 at 2:58 p.m.

Seems to me that everytime something gets taxed, we the ordinary people suffer..... I have a hard enough time as it is just to get through month to month. I have nothing else to give up in my world to make up the difference for taxing this and taxingno breaks at the end of the year. I so want to buy a home next year and I am afraid I will drowned in tax debt because of politics. I have no luxuries. No cable, no internet, no fancy car oh yea and no groceries because I can't afford that either and I make to much as a single person to get food stamps or help with heating bills. So Mr Patterson what else would you like to take from me? How about my debts? Can u help me with that? No I did not think so. I will not vote for you in a million years and the only reason you are there is by default. Spizter liked prostitutes and you like sticking it to us NYers so tell what is the difference between you and him....

What a bunch of malarky. The same b.s. why fuel is so high and is so plentiful. Making extra plates is outrageous on the eco impact. It also appalls me all the stupid paperwork. If it's the same job over and over again why do we have to download all 20 pages, or so, everytime! There are laots of ways to create jobs that are eco friendlier than this. Which way are we digging to bury ourselves?

Aw, come on guys... don't worry, your anger will fade and you'll go back to voting for liberals. I mean come on, it's not about party(Although more big D's seem to be liberal), it's about how liberal they are.

Liberal=Big Government=Big Taxes
After all, they can't fix the problem unless they control all the resources. It'll all be better when we work for them anyway. In NYS, 1 in 8 people work for the State - as compared to the nationwide average of 1 in 17.

So, just calm down and realize soon you'll all forget and go right back to voting Liberal and someday it'll be a paradise in NYS and we can all be part of the Commune.

As they say in Jamaica as they are screwing you over by cramming you all into a little boat for your tour money - Ever'tin Be Irie, Ever'tin Be Irie.

Did you know that the taxes on gas in NJ is about 30-40 cents a gallon less than NYS...the saying "it's a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there" is sounding better all the time.

More money, less glue

Posted by Maryann Villanueva, Port Crane, NY - Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at 7:39 p.m.

How rediclous is that, we as a New Yorkers have to pay more for some things that the State messed up. The funny thing is the regisration sticker doesn't ever stick right on the windshield, so if we have to paid more for that, then the State of New York should invest some of our money to place a better glue on it. I have to tape my regisration sticker to my windshield, "that is really sad." The state can't ever put better glue on it, but we are require to pay more. Gov. Patterson need to get OUT of office!

this is getting out of control

Posted by Bill Breckenridge, Watkins Glen, NY - Sunday, September 27, 2009 at 10:19 p.m.

1) Why punish us when it wasnt our fault that the STATE made when the plates were made. we should not have to pay a single cent for their mistake.
2) Thanks to Govn. Patterson i lost my job back in January. He made budget cuts and the program i worked for was then cut do to the funding be cut for that program. the sad thing is the program was for juvinile's that have trouble in school and at home. so those kids are out of luck when it comes to life now, some of them only had the program to look forward too.
3) DO NOT VOTE FOR PATTERSON IN 2010, VOTE FOR SOMEONE THAT WILL BRING OUR ECONOMY BACK TO WHAT IS WAS WHEN OUR PREVIOUS GOVN. DESIDED TO HAVE HIS OWN PRIVATE FUN WITH A HOOKER. GIVE ME A BREAK AT LEAST THE GUY DIDNT USE OUR MONEY TO PAY FOR THE HOOKER.

RE:NY State Plates

Posted by Barbara R, Sullivan County ny - Thursday, September 10, 2009 at 4:13 a.m.

The economy isn't bad enough, with people losing their homes and jobs and the ever increasing gas prices, taxes etc..Oh yes, did I mention that they want to raise NY State taxes another 2 percent.Sullivan County is a very depressed county in the first place. But then for some reason the big wigs decide to start raising everything. Its no wonder why so many people leave NY and re-locate, they are chasing people right out of here.
I gave up shopping around here, and I will spend my shopping dollars in Pennsylvannia, where the gas prices are 20 cents cheaper, the taxes are cheaper and lucky for me PA is right over the border. So when the big wigs finally realize,"Gee, I wonder why revenue in Sullivan County has decreased? ", maybe they will wake up and smell the coffee. Many people besides me shop over there, I flat out refuse to shop locally, unless there is a sale of some kind and I'm not the only one.But as far as raising the costs of registering and being forced to but a new set of plates, thats robbery!!!!I was just in DMV last week to take care of some business and found out too, that they just raised the cost of getting a drivers permit to $112.00, I feel sorry for these youngsters that come from low income families,NY State wants them to get off Public assistance, yet they keep holding them back, now where is any incentive? More money and more money? And if I decide to re-register my vehicle, guess I'm going to keep my old plate number, so the big people up in Albany, won't end up with another $20 of my hard earned money in their pockets, tell them to take a cut back in salary, if they want more money, because there are too many hard working people like myself working not one, but 2 full time jobs to support them. At one time there was a point where I was proud to say I was a New Yorker, not any more, I'm just about ready to leave and go somewhere else.

You have got to be kidding me!! Is this crap for real? So let me get this straight... So because NY State issued plates in 2001 that are a hazzard because of their reflective tape wearing off we now have to pay for new plates. That is in no way fair to NY citizens. We already get raped with taxes and fees now they are going to up them. I am not getting a raise this year at my job because of the economy, now I have to sink extra money into the state for this bogus reason!!! As someone else said, send me a new reflective sticker, i'll gladly send the a $1 or $2 for their efforts. Obviously some of our elected officials have to go. I would like to know if they plan on paying for this crap too!!! This is rediculous, I have lived in NY all my life, and I am seriously considering moving because of all of these fees they seem to think they can charge us.

Hey lets all just pick up and leave the state like suggested, but if we all leave then no one will be there to buy your home, so you will have to get a loan to buy a new house where ever you move to. Throw away the equity in your home and start all over again. What do you think were are a bunch of nomadic neanderthols? Just able to pick up our families when the food runs out and move to another area like it is nothing. Poeple like to be around their families. Some of us have jobs we like, we like the area we live in and are not willing to just pick up and move. And we should not have to! And we have every right to protest the leaglized exstortion like the license plate debachle. And every right to fight against it, leaving is the way a weak person deals with those type of situations. The strong will stay and fight for whats right and against what is wrong. Good thing these people who just pick up and leave were not in charge during the colonial days, other wise we would be singing "God save the Queen" instead of "Hail to the cheif". Write your Senator and let him know your against the license plate rip off.

You can't change New Yorr States political Status

Posted by D O, Stracuse - Thursday, August 06, 2009 at 2:59 p.m.

Wow, ok let understand why it is impossible to change the poltical status of NYS. 1) Democrats advocate social programs that pay certain people to stay home, not work and collect welfare and have as many kids as possible to up the cash amount of the checks they receive ie. (your tax dollars) These people vote too, they don't want to work but they want money too so they can eat, cloth their children and yes some of them even use the money for illicit activities. Republicans don't advocate social programs so if these people vote republican it's good bye free ride. So who do you think they are going to vote for, you got it Democrats. Because of New York City and the down trodden areas of most major cities the democartic vote will always win in NYS. Unless they make it mandatory that you have a job to vote well it just isn't going to happen. The mor buisnesses that leave new your state the poorer its citizens become. The inmigrants floosd to NYS too because they know it is easy to get on welfare here so we have to carry that load too, yes I know they can't vote but the extra free-loading does not help us out any either.

DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!

Posted by Edward Bennett, Fort Mill, SC - Thursday, August 06, 2009 at 2:40 p.m.

Come on people of NY what are you complaining about?? All but a couple of your polital leaders where voted into office by you the people. All of you that do not take the time to find out what these polititions are all about BEFORE you vote for them deserve exactly what you are getting. The rest of you need to realize that NY is and has been a democrat state for many years. If you don't like things the way they are, change them! If the democrats are so great, why isn't NYS a utopia? Based on your comments it is anything but! How many years of the same old BS are you people going to stand for? Do you need to hit on the head with a club to see the light? Write to your elected officials and tell them how unhappy you are with what they are doing. If you sit on your butt and do nothing that is exactly what will happen! Yes it takes time and effort, so do your part and quit your complaining. You can change things for the better if you do something and others do something too. My advise is to put-up or shut-up. Other states peoples have gotten change. Are you as good as the other states or are you just a bunch of complainers??? You the people are the one's that supply all these waisted funds. It's your money not the states money. For crying out loud, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!!

Plate fees

Posted by James Burns, USA - Thursday, August 06, 2009 at 2:11 p.m.

Gee wis Robert, I feel really bad for your dilema with custom plates. You can dump the custom fees and end up paying less. It's people just like you that keep electing these democrat idiots. You deserve exactly what you get! As for the rest of you normal working (or unemployed) stiffs, most of us could move if we really wanted too. Give up the smokes and/or beer every day and see how fast you can save money. Give up the fast food lunches or dinners. If you took the time to write down EVERY cent you spend, you would be amazed how much money you waist. I did it and I saved more money than I ever did. Adjust your payrole withholding so you don't get that big refund back. You are just going to waist it anyway. There are many ways to save money if you really want too but most would rather bitch and complain than do anything. I raise a family of four, owned my own home, drove decent vehicles and saved too. All with an income less than $25,000. If you really want to screw NYS save up and move out. I DID!

More State Corruption

Posted by B H, Syracuse - Thursday, August 06, 2009 at 12:19 p.m.

Another example of the corruption that goes on in our state government. I can't wait for Patterson to be gone and take that useless DMV commisioner and Comptroller with him as well. Whatever fees they take in will be robbed for the General fund the same way they did the motorcycle education fund and they won't have to inform the public where that money goes either. I'm glad to be leaving this state soon.

Well....I guess this is my two cents...

Posted by Rick Hawkins, Syracuse - Thursday, August 06, 2009 at 10:38 a.m.

Since it seems we can't get rid of the crooks in this state, (meaning our Governor or Unions). The Governor for being the normal liberal Democrat model (Tax & Spend), remember 'you the people' voted for him...deal with it. As far as unions are concerned, the people have allowed the to run rampant with bad leadership choices and unbelievably excessive wages have literally. Once Unions were needed and had a major purpose, child labor enforcement & fair labor hiring and pay policies. but they have outlived their usefulness by raising wages so far that the US cannot compete in the world marketplace, let alone horrible decisions like NPG that led to a monstrous loss of jobs. After all, jobs that pay less are worth more than no jobs at all.
We all need to write this guys and tell him what a wonderful job he is doing at running this state into the ground. Of course, his goal could be to thin out the population...eh, that will work, but NY state will be left with the people that can't/won't find jobs and those that can't/won't move out.
If we let this continue, we are to blame!
And don't let all these people that buy foreign transportation fool you by saying its built here, it is assembled here with foreign made parts, by displaced union labor and when all the dust has settled the profits take a hike overseas instead of staying here where they are needed. I say place a tax on all foreign owned corporations and freeze all utility costs, that in itself would bring in more revenue and put people back to work.

new plates

Posted by Joe -, - - Thursday, August 06, 2009 at 10:27 a.m.

This is in regards To having to buy new license plates.I was wondering if there is any way of contacting New York State so that people can protest against this law.People in New York have enough to deal with. The unemployment rate is soaring making it harder for people to live as it is.The cost of housing is always rising along with gas prices, food and other things.People can"t afford to make ends meet as it is.I think that the government should loosen their own pockets and put some of their money back into getting the economy back on track. If they keep raising the prices and changing laws making it harder for Americans to live, then they are no better than the communist countries.Actually some communist countries have it a lot better than we could ever wish for.I personally think that our so called president should be impeached for running us farther in debt.Thank you

Plates

Posted by Donna Conley, Seneca Falls - Thursday, August 06, 2009 at 10:26 a.m.

My husband, son and i have run a construction co. in seneca falls for over 35 years. i would like to comment on the new fee's that will be charged on new license plates and registrations. once again i fell taken advantage of by the state. your article does not state how it was voted in. poor public one car to worry about. how would they like a fleet of trucks to add 25 percent to currect registrations and then the new plate fees. In NY dump trucks pay for additonal privileges to run on the roads. these priviledges all have permits w/plate numbers on. so for us to get new plates it is not a fun job. We only have five vehicles that would fall under this but; our present reg. run$450.00 to $900.00 try adding 25% on. Now, consider Riccili, Wadhams and other large trucking companies. Ask them how big a burden this is. our state needs new leaders that somehow can run the state and do cut back that will not drive business out of business or out of the state.

You should have seen this comming

Posted by D O, Syracuse - Thursday, August 06, 2009 at 9:41 a.m.

Well the title says it all and furthermore expect to see more of this type of fleecing of america until the economy gets better. They will find ways/make up excuses to tax (and yes I said TAX) things they know you have to have like a car or a drives licence and know you will have to pay it if you want to keep driving or what ever the case maybe. What you won't see is a cut in state or govt. spending, jobs of state employee, the thruway being automated or free ever in your life time. When you have a State job your part of the good old boy club, and the last thing they want to do is upset the state union by eliminate peoples jobs, god forbid if that were to ever happen. The reason the "fat/soda" tax never went through is because thats something if you really did not have to have it you could do with out and opt out of paying by just not buying those foods that had the tax applied. Another reason is that the state saw the error of it ways and figured out that if people stopped buying sugared soda and candies which are taxable they would be loosing the 8.25% tax and the taxes that retailers pay on those profits as well. So now they have decided to tax things they know you can't do without. And no its not a fee, lets call it what it really is, a tax! It will be interesting to see what clever ways the state invents to raise revenue in the future, you can bet it will be on things you can't really do with out, and will have no choice but to pay it. Remember in NYS having a drivers license is not a right, it a privalage so they can do what ever they want and if you want to keep being a legally licenced driver in good old NYS you will have no choice but to pay, pay, pay and pay again. I mean eveyone could just decide not to renew their registrations and drive an unregistered vehicle, they can't knock on everyones door or pull everyone over. But then they would probably charge you $7.00 a day while the vehicle was unregistered and they did not have the plates, and not let you reregister it until you pay them thousands of dollars in fees and penalties. They have you comming and going you really can never win! The only choice you have is to give up or leave the state. They can't tax the wealthiest people in the state because those people have enough money to just pick up and leave and go else where and avoid the tax. So the only way to do it is take more money out of the poor working stiffs pockets (or unemployed) who just can't pick up and leave, I mean everyone is just trying to keep their jobs now days, there is no place for many people to go and trust me they know that.

Fairy Tail?

Posted by Sandy Doty, New York State - Thursday, August 06, 2009 at 8:40 a.m.

Is it me, or does this resemble the story of Robin Hood. Not the part about taking from the rich and giving to the poor,(which we are all rapidly becoming), but the part about King Richard (or in our case, King David Patterson) taxing the peasants until he has every last farthing. When is it enough?

Driving us out of NY

time to leave ny

Posted by Joseph Palmiotto, Auburn - Thursday, August 06, 2009 at 8:04 a.m.

this is yet another way for NY to raise money without calling it a tax. with unemployment on the rise and fewer people to pay taxes Patterson's best ideas are to charge taxpayers (those of us left)more for no reason. if Patterson wants to raise some real cash, how about looking at the income from the indian nation. more and more land keeps going into sovereignty and off the tax roll checkerboarding across NY leaving the burden on the remaining residents. nice job Patterson, remember, you were not the one elected.

this goes along with the other lame brain ideas such as "fat" tax, soda tax, download tax which didnt get very far so they have to go after us for this. I got pulled over by the local police because ONE of my plate bulbs was out. Why are our licence plates lit up in the first place, for the hell of it or for visibility? So whats up with this reflective BS???

I hate to give them another idea ,but what's next a cover charge at the dmv. Last fall I had 10 state workers standing in my yard staring at one guy with a shovel for half an hour. I'm just saying! Auto-mate the toll booths! I don't think they have taken a look at them selves. Like this plate thing is going to save our state. How much does it actually cost to produce a set? Are we paying some inmates salary now?

Do you know the definition of insanity? "Its doing the same exact thing over and over and expecting different results." We are as much to blame as Albany why? Because every year we vote the same people back into office that screwed us the previos time. I have never voted for an incumbant in my life and will never do it no matter how good they are,, It just breeds corruption and power struggles as we saw in thwe past senete coup. So quit complaining and vote these jerks out you have the power of the lever !!!!

i think this is stupid. But at least we don'y have to run out on April 1st to get new plates, the article stated that it will start then but we don't have to get them until our registration is due. But i think these new fees are nuts, we can't afford more fees, i live on SSI, i can't afford this, most people can't right now.

License and Registration Renewal

Just another way for the state to run people out of here!! What are they thinking?? Just renewed my registration in July, so are they going to send everyone a new one, with the correct license plate # on it, or have they forgot that it is a viable piece of information on that window sticker??? I think the politicians for this state ought to think of better ideas to raise money, than this one. Maybe take a big pay cut in their salaries, because they obviously are doing their jobs, in which they were elected!!

Along with the economy being bad, how is someone supposed to pay for "new" plates if they are unemployed? They need their vehicle to look for a job. Plus it will be a pain to have to change the "new license plate number" on all important documents. Who has the extra money to pay extra to keep the same number. I think this is rediculous!

Keep some $$ local

Posted by John Francis, Syracuse - Wednesday, August 05, 2009 at 7:29 p.m.

This is a good time to remind drivers that when they renew license plates, they should take or send their renewal to a county-operated DMV, such as in Fulton, Oswego, Pulaski, Wampsville, Cortland, Lyons, Waterloo, or Auburn. Do not mail it to the processing center in Utica and do not take it to an office in Syracuse or North Syracuse. These are state-run facilities and the state keeps 100% of the revenue. Send your renewal to your county DMV and some of the money stays local. The same goes for when you renew your driver's license. It's worth the drive and you will not have to wait nearly as long in one of these smaller, more user-friendly offices. No I do not work for any state or county office. I am retired.

Posted by John Philllips, Syracuse, NY - Wednesday, August 05, 2009 at 6:58 p.m.

This is silly.. why are we going to have to pay another fee because the state made the license plates wrong. The article says that the reason for the hike in cost and the requirement for the new plates in because the "reflectivity" of the plates has worn out. Sounds as though the plates were made incorrectly, and.. therefore, the state should pay for the plates to be replaced.

Am I going to be expected to have to pay the fee again just because the state decides to issue new plates or am I only going to have to pay the extra $25.
