MARCY, ONEIDA COUNTY (AP) -- State Police have charged an upstate New York prison secretary with promoting prison contraband after she gave a personal item to an inmate with whom she was having sex.

Investigators declined to reveal what the item was, but said it was considered contraband. They charged 32-year-old Amy Gerling of Utica with a misdemeanor. Gerling was a civilian keyboard specialist at Mid-State Correctional Facility in Marcy.

She was issued an appearance ticket. State police didn't know if she has lawyer. Division of Parole officials said Gerling resigned Oct. 21. She had worked at the prison since 2008.

Troopers say Gerling had sexual relationships with at least two inmates. Prison officials said they are continuing an internal investigation.
