WATERTOWN -- In a race that has thrust New York's 23rd Congressional District into the national spotlight, both Bill Owens and Doug Hoffman pulled out all the stops one day before the election.

In a last ditch effort to drum up support, Conservative Congressional candidate Doug Hoffman, joined by former U.S. Senator Fred Thompson and country singer John Rich, made their case to hundreds of voters at a rally in Watertown. Thompson says, "The strength of his courage, and what he did and what he's doing is going to carry us all the way through and it is going to make him a great Congressman."

Hoffman leads Democrat Bill Owens in the polls. Despite Republican Dede Scozzafava's last minute exit from the race, and flip to endorsing the Democrat. Hoffman says he'll be the change Washington needs. Doug says, "With new jobs, new businesses, and a new economy that's going to carry us through the next 10, 20, 50 years."

Earlier in the day, Bill Owens put forth his star power as Vice President Joe Biden dropped by to help stump for votes. Biden says, "I say to all those moderate Republicans, those decent thinking folks who are pragmatic Republicans, join us. We welcome you."

In a predominantly Republican district, Democrats are looking to pull ahead before Tuesday's election so they can increase their presence with another seat in Congress. Owens says an investment in green energy will pave the future of the 23rd. Owens says, "I'll work with the Obama Administration to get our economy back on track with good paying jobs and investment in green energy."

All of this comes to an end Tuesday when voters head to the polls. It will be a busy day for both candidates as Owens tries to close in on the five point lead Hoffman holds.

Star power doesn't mean a thing

Posted by Diana Manwaring, Pulaski, NY - Tuesday, November 03, 2009 at 9:34 a.m.

All the endorsements in the world will NOT sway my vote. Most voters care about the issues, not about star power. I, for one, am sick and tired of all the negative ads that have come out during this campaign, all of which seem to be on the Scozzafava/Owens side of the race.

Think about this tactic, people - what does it say about a candidate who resorts to such behavior? Any politician who has something of value to offer to the public wouldn't act like this.

As far as the 23rd Congressional district is concerned, I am voting for Doug Hoffman later today. And I don't give a hoot as to whether Obama, Biden, or anyone other celebrity approve of my choice.
