The 23rd district spans 11 counties and the candidates are canvassing as much as they can on election day. Democrat Bill Owens voted this morning in his home town of Plattsburgh and is spending the day in the Saranac Lake region before returning home to watch the results. Owens says, "Our message has gotten out. People have talked to us about the jobs issues we have raised. About keeping Fort Drum strong, Health Care and solving the farm crisis."

Conservative candidate Doug Hoffman started out as a virtual unknown in this race, running on the Conservative line. He slowly took votes away from Republican candidate Dede Scozzafava who left the race three days ago. Hpffman spent the day campaigning in Oswego County and will spend tonight in the Saranac Lake region, where his headquarters is based. Hoffman says, "I'm still energized. I think the adrenaline is still flowing and we're pretty excited about today. We're cautiously optimistic but we're working hard to get the vote out and hope people support us through the polls."

Both candidates are optimistic about winning this evening. Hoffman is leads Owens by a 5 point margin, but with Republican Dede Scozzafava out of the race and flipping to endorse owens, he's hoping he'll pick up some of those voters and pull ahead.
