ALBANY -- The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles has released a mockup of what the new state license plates will look like when they are issued beginning in April 2010.

Called the “Empire Gold” plates, the new tags will be required because the state says the the current white and blue plates are losing their reflectivity and readability. The state says that the existing plates were only guaranteed to retain their reflectivity for five years, but have been in use since 2001.

The new plates will command a $25 fee, in addition to the regular vehicle registration renewal cost. The state hopes to use the revenue generated by these new plates to offset deficits in the state budget.

“The bold colors of the new license plate reflect New York’s force and its resilience,” said Commissioner of Motor Vehicles David Swarts. “These new plates, in the official colors of the State of New York, will help  maintain highway safety, reduce the number of unregistered and uninsured vehicles on our roads, and generate $129 million in General Fund revenue over two years, which will help address the State’s financial crisis.”

The new plates are gold, with dark blue letters and numbers in the central part of the plate, separated by a small dark blue state silhouette. There is a dark blue banner across the length of the top of the plate, with “New York” printed in gold in the center. “Empire State” is in dark blue letters across the bottom.

The DMV will begin issuing these new “Empire Gold” plates to vehicles whose registrations expire in May 2010. The DMV says that those choosing to keep their current plate number/letter combination on the new Empire Gold plate will be required to pay an extra $20.00 fee. Those motorists holding a personalized plate will automatically be re-issued the same number/letter combination on their new plate.

I thought they were recinding this BS

Posted by Norman Zelinsky, Home - Tuesday, December 08, 2009 at 11:00 a.m.

I thought they desided not to do this. Must have been another ploy to stop the fallout and just usher it in when it was too late to do anything about. There was an article in the paper that it was being recinded.
ENOUGH OF TEH STEALING FOR THE PEOPLE OF NYS.

UGLY PLATES

Posted by t morse, syracuse - Friday, November 13, 2009 at 9:23 a.m.

If anyone looks at these plates and can't see that they look just like the plates from the 60's and 70's someone is blind. The plates were ugly before and even uglier now. So many other states have very nice plates such as South Carolina, Mississippi and Alabama and many others. Someone should see how many plates are in NYC not including Taxis and then how many in upstate and then we can see who is paying the majority of these new fees. My plates are less than 2 years old...I didn't really like these plates but they are surely better than what the state is offering now. We need to start standing up to this state We are bigger than the state. We need to change who we vote in, not necessarily Patterson (he is default) but he didn't do this on his own.

NYS Plate

Once again upstate is paying for those living in New York city. In NYC there are few people owing cars so this will not affect them. Just like our property tax, high, so it can support NYC. Either NYC needs to become their own 'State' or maybe people living in NYC should be charged a Renters tax. Time NYC stops reling on upstaters to pay their way.

really????

these are so ugly i cant stand it. i love that the state masks the fact that they need money from us by manufacturing new plates. why not just go in to each of our bank accounts and take out a $20??? wouldnt that just be easier? I would in fact pay more just to keep my same white plates. they have changed those once already since the ugly OLD yellow ones. and i think that was only cause they needed to add more characters on to the plates. at least that made some sense. UGLY...

One more NYS does wrong!

Posted by David Gallardo, Liverpool, NY - Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at 11:24 p.m.

With unemployment at an all time low and no sign of recovery in sight, NYS has this bright idea! As far as the comment about "making sure cars are properly insured..." That is the least of our driving problems. How about the several motorcyclists that were killed this summer because someone didn't see them? That wasn't because they're plates weren't reflective, it's because we don't have state mandated regulations for driver's to renew they're license other then a stupid eye exam. How about the 70+ year old driver's we see on the road all the time. That can barely see over the steering wheel, not going the speed limit, not signaling or basically paying any F*#@ing attention at all!!!

This is crazy!!!!!!!!

I came up here from PA for a wonderful job opp. but now just a little over a year I get laid off. I am a single mother just trying to make ends meet and they want to throw more fees on me. The real B.S. is i just got my car and paid for plates and reg. not even 3 months ago. I wish that I had never moved. I was just as well off in PA as I am here now but at least there I had family. Not to mention the nydot or whatever its called does a worse job than Pendot and for anyone who has ever been in PA that is quite inpressive and not in a good way. I will be leaving as soon as I can and I would advise that everyone should do the same and let them have there NEW plates all to themselves.

Hit us again!

Think about it. How many people in New York CITY own cars? So, once again UPSTATE is paying! For something we DON'T need! And I bet most of the money goes to NYC. And they wonder why people are leaving New York State!

What's next?

If I remember correctly, we were in a battle with the state of New Jersey a few years back over who was entitled to display the Statue of Liberty on their plates. I'm still scratching my head as to why, after all the hoopla, we did away with that design. Now this?

This is rediculous. Iknow they want/ need and starve for money, but really... there spending money to make money. they should come up with a better idea, than new license plates! like cutting the budget in areas we dont need , and keep the ones we do need, such as education and health care. just my opinion, feel free to disagree.

Who's Idea Was This???

Posted by Hope Wagner, Utica - Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at 7:21 p.m.

Like everyone else I take pride in what I work for, but these licence plates are the worst color for any modern day vehicle. Here we are in the 21st century with hi-tec abilities to see light years away but "they" are struggling seeing a reflective plate on the back of a vehical a car lenght away??? Nonsense! I understand the reasoning behide the extra charges to help with the financial issues that NYS is subjected to and I dont mind paying them!It is what it is! But, some where "WE" the people, should have the choice of at least what goes on our vehical! These colored plates belong on a 1974 Pinto NOT a 2009 balck F-250 or any other Vehical in this mulenium!!!! Is there a petition going around on this? If not there should be! Every time I wax my truck and look at these plates and think that I had to pay for these on top of it all! Maybe NASA should take over the N.Y.S D.O.T! They have no problem!

new fees on lisense plates

Posted by gary lanty, tully ny - Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at 7:02 p.m.

with the all new yorkers out of work,
how does this new fee help our households make ends meet. if we downsize our goverment maybe we wouldn't need theses new fees.

What a crock

Posted by kim galster, central square - Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at 5:43 p.m.

I am a single mother "TRYING" to support my family. I work very hard for my money that the state seems to keep taking as fast as I make it. They raised the hunting fees, I had to pay extra to register my vehicle, I had to pay extra to renew my drivers license, now THIS. PLEASE NY STOP BEFORE WE ALL LEAVE. My pay check does not go up because you ask for more money!!! This money comes out of household money, money for my light bill, car insurance, ETC......

What will happen if we move out of state faster WHO WILL BE LEFT TO PAY ALL THESE NEW FEES. I can't understand what is wrong with my plate that is only a few months OLD??

New license plates

These new "Empire Gold" look alot like the plates before the current blue and white models. Maybe there was a surplus of that ugly yellow.
