ALBANY -- Governor David Paterson says he could eliminate the State’s new license plate requirement if the State Legislature works with him to identify responsible, alternative savings measures before the release of his 2010-11 Executive Budget.

The new license plate requirement is scheduled to go into effect on April 1 and is projected to produce $129 million in revenue in each of the next two fiscal years (2010-11 and 2011-12). It was part of the enacted 2009-2010 budget, which was passed by both houses of the Legislature. The State has a current-year 2009-10 deficit of $3.2 billion and a 2010-11 deficit of $6.8 billion.

“We need to act in a fiscally responsible way,” Governor Paterson said. “When elected officials call for the elimination of revenue in a budget that is already $6.8 billion in the red without offering alternatives, it is simply not responsible. If the Legislature works with me, prior to the release of the 2010-11 Executive Budget, to identify real, recurring savings that will replace the revenue that would be lost, I will eliminate the new license plate requirement.”

“County Clerks, who are coming to Albany tomorrow, are encouraged to bring alternative savings suggestions with them, which is something they have failed to do so far,” the Governor added.

So is this about dangerously unreflective license plates, or is it about "real, recurring savings that will replace the revenue that would be lost [from the license plate debacle]

I suggest, Governor, that the license plate fee is none of the above - that there would have been NO "real, recurring savings."

I also suggest you "will eliminate the new license plate requirement” because you are a politician, and would pet a snake if it were held still for you . . . just like Velesky, Aubertine, DeFransisco, and the rest of the theives and liars that are stealing us blind from Albany.

rest in peace, kingdom of the blind (AKA NY)

Let Politicians Share in Cuts

If the Governor on down to the state legislatures all took a cut in pay, that would go a long way to making up for the money expected from forcing all New Yorkers in getting a new license plate.

Lying again

So it really isn't about the reflectie material on the liscense plates it is just about the money made from them..We were supposed to be in NEED of this because of the color of our old plates..Now the truth comes out..if the county governments can show him where he can make up this money then he will drop it..Just more lies from our great NY Governor..

an idea

Ok, here is an idea. Let's take away and sell some of the states vehicles. NOT the ones the road crew etc use, how about some that the politicians use, the people from Albany etc. Hmm that would save gas money, insurance money, car purchase money..
