GENEVA (AP) -- A man imprisoned for three years for violently shaking his infant daughter denied stabbing to death his girlfriend and her 12-year-old daughter at an apartment in upstate New York.

John Brown of Palmyra was arrested Friday after 34-year-old Helen Buchel and her daughter, Brittany Passalacqua were found dead in Geneva, 40 miles southeast of Rochester.

The 35-year-old Brown pleaded not guilty Monday to first-degree murder.

Authorities say he was jailed for two weeks in September for taking Buchel's car without permission and told he could no longer reside with her.

Brown was sentenced in January 2004 for causing serious physical injury to his daughter the previous March.
