The 37 year old mother of three who was critically injured in a car crash last month in Bridgeport is being moved to Community General Hospital in Syracuse to begin physical therapy. Peggy Blume's family says she is talking and recognizing people including her family. That is a far cry from the first week after the accident when they did not know whether Blume would survive her injuries.

Blume's sister-in-law Kathy Blume says Peggy cannot walk right, but is determined to go home from the hospital in about eight weeks. She has already endured 5 surgeries and has at least two more ahead of her. Her list of injuries included compound fractures to her arm and both legs. She's had surgery on her ankle, hip, legs and arm.

Family members have been taking care of her two boys and a girl who are 14, 12 and 8 years old. Kathy Blume points to three key reasons for the improvement in her sister-in-law's condition. She credits the medical care from staff at University Hospital. Also, the thoughts and prayers from people concerned about Peggy's well being. And, most importantly, Peggy's own determination to survive her near fatal injuries so she can continue her life with her family.

Blume's family and friends are planning a fundraiser for her to help with expenses. It is now scheduled for Saturday, September 18th at the Bridgeport Fireman's Field.

Blume was injured when she pulled her van over on Route 31 to avoid a speeding SUV coming toward her. The Chevy Blazer still struck her van head on.

The same May 24 crash in Bridgeport killed 17-year-old Victoria Deverso of Liverpool. State Police say 18-year-old Chelsea Kuss was driving the Trailblazer that Deverso was riding in. Kuss was trying to pass several cars when she crashed into Peggy Blume's stopped minivan. Kuss is still in the hospital recovering from her injuries.
