CLAY -- A man who led police on a chase late Tuesday night now faces several criminal charges, including attempted murder.

According to the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office, 37-year-old Stanley Lostumbo James Street in East Syracuse has been charged with two counts of attempted murder in the 2nd degree, one count of petit larceny, one count of criminal mischief in the 2nd degree, three counts of unlawfully fleeing a police officer in the 3rd degree, three counts of reckless driving and multiple vehicle and traffic violations. These charges stem from a car chase which began when Lostumbo was allegedly caught trying to steal from a vending machine outside the Great Northern Mall in the Town of Clay.

According to police, Lostumbo was discovered by mall security trying to break into a vending machine, and fled in a stolen dump truck. He initially lead police down Interstate 481 to Interstate 690, and also was chased down a railroad track at one point, through backyards and school grounds and through East Syracuse neighborhoods at speeds up to 65 miles per hour.

The chase ended in DeWitt near the intersection of Thompson Road and Burnet Avenue around 11:30 PMDeputies say they tried to box the dump truck in. Lostumbo rammed the dump truck into one of the patrol cars. That's when police opened fire, shooting into the dump truck and grazing Lostumbo's shoulder.

Lostumbo was then arrested and taken to Upstate University Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained from bullet fragments.

Sheriff Walsh says there was a female passenger inside the dump truck. She has been identified as  20-year-old Kyla K Kazel, who was also injured by a bullet fragment and was treated and released from Crouse Hospital. Kazel was also charged with petit larceny and criminal mischief in the 2nd degree along with criminal sale of a controlled substance in the 3rd degree, criminal possession of a controlled substance in the 3rd degree and criminal possession of a controlled substance in the 7th degree in connection with a prior investigation.

According to Sheriff Walsh, Lostumbo has a history of criminal activity in our area including grand larceny and assault.
